Chlamydia

  • Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection (STI)
  • Most people with chlamydia do not notice anything wrong, so getting tested is the only way to know you have it
  • Chlamydia is usually quick and easy to cure with antibiotics and you may be able to get treatment sent by post
  • If chlamydia is not treated early, it can spread to other parts of the body and may sometimes lead to painful or serious complications that may affect your fertility
  • If you have chlamydia, your sexual partners need to get tested too, and may need treatment

Who should get a chlamydia test?

If you’re sexually active it’s a good idea to get tested for chlamydia and other STIs once a year.

  • Notice any chlamydia symptoms
  • Have sex without a condom with a new sexual partner or have multiple sexual partners
  • Want to stop using condoms with a partner
  • Have another STI, or a sexual partner has an STI
  • Are pregnant or planning to get pregnant

When should I get a chlamydia test?

If you have chlamydia symptoms or a sexual partner has chlamydia, get tested straight away. You may be able to order a free home testing kit or you may be referred to a local sexual health service.

If you have no symptoms, you can test straight away if you want to. But the test is likely to be more accurate if you wait until 2 weeks after you last had sex. This is because it can take time for chlamydia to show up on a test.

Check if you can order a free home testing kit.
