Will recommend to everyone who needs a Sexual Health Test and treatment. "Derek"Syphilis
- Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection – it is usually passed on during sex (vaginal, anal or oral) or from direct contact with the genitals of someone with syphilis
- It’s possible to have syphilis and not notice anything wrong, so getting tested is the only way to know if you have it
- Syphilis is usually easy to cure with antibiotics
- If syphilis is not treated, it can affect lots of different parts of the body causing very serious health problems over time
- If you have syphilis, your sexual partners need to get tested too, and may need treatment
Who should get a syphilis test?
If you’re sexually active it’s a good idea to get tested for syphilis and other STIs once a year, when you change sexual partners, or if you want to stop using condoms with a partner.
Consider getting a syphilis test if:
- You or a sexual partner notice any syphilis symptoms. These can include a skin sore (often on the genital or anal area), a mouth ulcer, a rash, a flu-like illness and even problems with hearing or vision
- A sexual partner has syphilis or another STI
- You or a sexual partner have sex without a condom with a new partner or multiple partners
- You share drug injecting equipment
- You are planning to get pregnant; if you are already pregnant you should be offered a free syphilis test as part of your pregnancy care
When should I get a syphilis test?
If you have syphilis symptoms or a sexual partner has syphilis, get tested straight away. You may be able to order a free home testing kit or you may be referred to a local sexual health service.
If you have no symptoms, you can do a syphilis test straight away but you may need another test later. This is because it can take up to 3 months for syphilis to show up on a test.
If you are pregnant, it is important to get a syphilis test if there is a chance you may have been exposed to syphilis at any time during your pregnancy.
Check if you can order a free home testing kit.
